In the modern era of baseball, we’ve witnessed teenage phenoms revolutionize the game in ways like never before. While there have always been bonus babies in every sport, there’s something special about seeing an adolescent who can drive a ball 400 feet or throw the ball over 95 miles per hour.
The combination of physics, genetics, and age all seems to converge at a much earlier time than most talents. It’s why we’re witnessing more and more MLB stars who are debuting before, or right after, the start of their 20s. The Pirates’ Konnor Griffin, who just signed a nine-year, $140 million extension at the age of 19, is the latest example of a phenom who took the fast track to The Show.
At just 16 years old, California high school star Striker Pence is already carrying a name that resonates in baseball circles. The nephew of former MLB All-Star Hunter Pence, Striker has emerged as one of the most electrifying young arms in the country. He’s being hyped as perhaps the most likely candidate to be the top pick in the 2028 MLB Draft, fueled by a fastball that has reportedly touched 101 mph. That’s an astounding number that feels almost fictional for a kid who is still just a sophomore.
That alone makes the West Coast prep star an intriguing candidate, and that velocity certainly puts him in an elite class. But there’s more to his game than just what he brings to the mound. In Striker’s case, he’s also a dangerous position player, as well. With a combination of power and athleticism that has scouts paying close attention, the pitcher-third baseman could be the next two-way player to make his way to the Majors.

On the mound, his arm speed is explosive, and the ball seems to be right on top of the hitters before they can react. At the plate and in the field, Pence’s physicality and instincts suggest he’s far more than a one-dimensional flamethrower.
What makes his rise particularly compelling is his velocity. Triple-digit readings are typically reserved for polished college arms or professionals deep into development systems.
For a high school sophomore to reach that threshold places him in an exceptionally small group, immediately elevating him into national prospect conversations. And the next two years will bring him more scrutiny than he’s ever received in his life. So, how he handles that extra attention will be an indicator of how he will adjust to professional baseball.
Still, there’s a sense that Striker Pence is only scratching the surface of his enormous potential. Clearly, he hasn’t fully ‘grown into his body’ yet, so he will add muscle and strength with proper conditioning. His connection to the game through his uncle provides a unique perspective, as he already has a baseball bloodline to go along with a boatload of talent. While that doesn’t guarantee professional success, it certainly won’t hinder him at all, either.
For now, Striker Pence represents something captivating in baseball: An extremely young prospect who can physically do things that some Hall of Famers couldn’t do in their career. It’s the idea that we may be on the verge of seeing something that captures our imagination. Something so rare, like a unicorn, that it can’t help but be noticed. And in an almost ironic way, there seems to be more and more of them popping up nowadays. The next generation has the opportunity to shape the game in ways that were never thought imaginable.
That is the level of potential that Pence possesses. With his ability to play all facets of the game, a famous last name, and an out-of-this-universe heater, he’s a strong indication of what baseball in the future just might look like.
