Leadership can often be a quality that is difficult to fully encapsulate as to what is required. Certainly, the complete absence of leadership can almost immediately be recognized within an organization.
There is another aspect, however, that can become a little trickier to see. This would be a head figure who truly only has the title in name only.
Such people will often be vocal and have something of a presence. They do not, though, truly establish themselves in a meaningful way that actually impacts people’s lives for the better beyond a paycheck.
This is part of what Houston Cougars head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson discusses, as shared on X by Coach AJ Mental Fitness.
Avoiding difficult confrontations ultimately leads to more intense and undesirable consequences later.
According to coach Sampson, this aspect is required to be one of the main pillars of any successful program.
As stated by the Houston HC himself, “If you’re going to build a culture, the first thing you have to come to grips with is you’re going to have confrontation. Because you want it done your way.”
Even this quote does something of a disservice to the actual message. It is not so much about doing things ‘your’ way. Instead, the words from coach Sampson are more about ensuring that quality persists throughout the program. This can oftentimes come into conflict with players who are tired or who are used to skating by on their natural talents, never having been forced to fully give of themselves into a cause that is bigger than themselves.
One can tell while listening to the interview how seriously coach Sampson takes this specific point.
Being willing to enter into conversations where others aren’t and having the gumption to actually hold people accountable is what separates true leaders at the end of the day from everyone else.
