On June 28, 1992, the United States Olympic Basketball Team, featuring NBA players for the first time, made its debut in an exhibition game against Cuba in Portland, Oregon. The Americans, led by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and a collection of other future Hall of Famers, breezed through the competition, 136-59. Unanimously considered the greatest collection of basketball talent ever assembled, the squad earned its immortal nickname, ‘The Dream Team’.
The team’s historic roster also featured Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, John Stockton, Chris Mullin, Clyde Drexler, and Christian Laettner, the lone collegiate player selected to the squad. Coached by Chuck Daly, the group overwhelmed every opponent with a combination of athleticism, skill, and star power that the basketball world had never witnessed. Although the exhibition victory over Cuba was only a tune-up, it marked the beginning of one of the most dominant runs in Olympic history.
