The Milwaukee Bucks trade the game’s best big man and their spiritual leader to the Los Angeles Lakers that would set the stage for Showtime

On June 16, 1975, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. The blockbuster trade was officially completed when the Milwaukee Bucks sent him to the Lakers in exchange for a package of young players.
The deal brought center Elmore Smith, guards Brian Winters and Junior Bridgeman, and forward Dave Meyers to Milwaukee, while delivering one of basketball’s most dominant talents to Southern California.
Abdul-Jabbar, who had led the Bucks to an NBA championship in 1971 and won three league MVP awards during his six seasons in Milwaukee, had requested a move after making it clear that he preferred to play in a larger metropolitan area. The Lakers, eager to return to championship contention, viewed the 7-foot-2 superstar as the cornerstone of their future.
The trade immediately altered the balance of power in the NBA. Although the Lakers would not win a title right away, Abdul-Jabbar became the franchise’s centerpiece and, later, the veteran anchor of the famed “Showtime” era alongside Magic Johnson. His arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter in Lakers history and set the stage for one of the most successful dynasties in professional sports.
