TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY… May 26th: Jose Canseco (unfortunately) uses his head while allowing a home run

On May 26th, 1993, Jose Canseco hilariously allowed a home run in the outfield when he missed a fly ball, it caromed off his head, and bounced comfortably into the bleachers.

The bizarre play came during a game between the Texas Rangers and the Cleveland Indians at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Indians slugger Carlos Martínez launched a deep fly ball toward right field that appeared harmless at first glance. Canseco drifted back toward the warning track, seemingly settling underneath it before losing track of the ball at the last possible second. Instead of landing in his glove, the ball struck Canseco directly on the top of the head and ricocheted over the wall for one of the strangest home runs in baseball history.

The moment instantly became a staple on sports blooper reels and remains one of the most replayed defensive miscues ever captured on television. Ironically, Canseco handled the embarrassment with a surprising sense of humor over the years, often laughing at himself while acknowledging that the play followed him long after his career ended. Despite the unforgettable mishap, Canseco was still one of baseball’s most feared power hitters during his era, becoming one of the sport’s first true 40-home run, 40-stolen base stars and helping redefine the game’s power-speed combination during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
