In their historic battle for boxing’s World Heavyweight title, two all-time greats engaged in a surprisingly short bout

On May 15, 1953, in his first world heavyweight title defense, Rocky Marciano knocked out former champion Jersey Joe Walcott in the 1st round at Chicago Stadium. The victory upped the Brockton Blockbuster’s record to 44-0 en route to eventually retiring undefeated as the champ.
The bout served as a dramatic continuation of one of boxing’s fiercest rivalries of the era. Just eight months earlier, Marciano had captured the heavyweight crown from Walcott in a grueling 13-round battle, rallying from behind on the scorecards with a thunderous knockout punch that instantly became part of boxing folklore. Their rematch, however, was far shorter and even more decisive.
The victory further enhanced Marciano’s reputation as a relentless force in the heavyweight division. Known for his incredible stamina, punching power, and iron determination, Marciano would go on to defend the title six times before retiring in 1956 with a perfect 49-0 record, a mark still unmatched among heavyweight champions.
