The Baby Birds have played surprisingly good baseball in the first two weeks of 2026, which has Cardinal Nation optimistic about the club’s immediate future

They say that, in life, if you have patience, good things will come in time. But currently, one of the youngest teams in Major League Baseball is in a hurry to prove that philosophy wrong.
The St. Louis Cardinals are in the midst of a rebuilding process, and with any youth movement comes growing pains. The fans in St. Louis were prepared for that. However, the Redbirds have been producing early results, and they are playing winning baseball to start the 2026 season. As a result, there’s a renewed energy around this team. Cardinal Nation realizes they may not be a contender, but they ARE going to be much better than expected.

What’s driving that early optimism is how quickly the young core has translated potential into production. St. Louis is currently a surprising 8-5 (through April 10), and tied with just about everyone else for first place in the National League Central. While that record is certainly propped up by the fact that it’s early in the year and things haven’t truly shaken out at all, the Baby Birds look like they belong in the mix, for now.
The fast start has led to a red wave of optimism hovering over the Gateway City this weekend, as the Cards continue their home series against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.
The loyal fan base, who were used to seeing not only winning clubs but much crisper play, had been turned off in the past couple of seasons, and it showed. Attendance dropped, and fan apathy was at a level that hasn’t been seen in St. Louis since the Eisenhower Administration.
Now, however, Cardinal Nation seems ready to hop on the Redbird Express again. (And no… that’s not a reference to the local transit service of the same name). The reasons for their newfound belief in the ballclub come from several different sources.
For one, the improvement on the mound is just as noticeable. The Cardinals’ rotation ERA through the opening stretch has dipped closer to the mid-3.00 range after sitting well north of that a year ago, and much of that comes from younger arms settling in.
More importantly, they’re not just throwing; they’re commanding the zone. First-pitch strike percentages are up, walks are down, and innings are being covered more efficiently. And while the bullpen has been a bit shaky, there are plenty of arms to audition in the Cardinals system. The team can take some time now to experiment and find the right mix.
Throughout the season’s first couple of weeks, the biggest individual catalyst behind the team’s early winning ways has been the emergence of Jordan Walker, who is finally beginning to look like the centerpiece the organization envisioned. After an up-and-down introduction to the majors, Walker has taken a noticeable step forward in 2026, driving the ball with authority and showing a much more refined approach at the plate.
Through the opening stretch, Walker produced an OPS just over .800, and he’s driving the ball to right field with much more frequency. That’s a clear indicator that he’s handling velocity and off-speed pitches far better to start this season than we’ve ever witnessed from the fourth-year Redbird before.

What makes the former first-round draft pick’s resurgence so impactful is how it has reshaped the entire Cardinals lineup. Walker has wreaked havoc just about anywhere he hits in the order, but he seems almost destined to be the club’s fourth or fifth hitter for the immediate future.
His renewed power and ability to create better pitches for hitters around him give the Cardinals a legitimate middle-of-the-lineup anchor they’ve been searching for. And it sets the fans’ minds at ease a bit, knowing that at least one cornerstone is firmly in place. And the smart baseball fans in St. Louis know: That alone can accelerate everything else the team is trying to construct.
And maybe the most important piece — the energy is real, and it’s contagious. Younger teams tend to play with a unique ‘we ‘ve-got-nothing-to-lose’ edge, but this group has paired that same type of enthusiasm with execution. They’ve already posted a winning record in one-run games early on, a sign that they should be competitive and play solid baseball throughout the Summer. For a Cardinal Nation that’s been aching for excitement, this young team should capture their imaginations with its inspired play
