On his way to the greatest career in hockey history, Wayne Gretzky ties Gordie Howe’s NHL record for the most goals scored all-time
On March 20, 1994, Wayne Gretzky scored two goals against the San Jose Sharks to tie Hall of Famer Gordie Howe’s record for the most goals in National Hockey League history with 801. The Great One would go on to break the record just a few nights later, on March 23rd, during a home game against the Vancouver Canucks.

The consensus greatest hockey player ever, Gretzky’s NHS totals are unmatched, featuring 894 goals, 1,963 assists, and 2,857 points in 1,487 games. Aptly dubbed ‘The Great One’ by both teammates and opponents, he holds the all-time NHL records for goals, assists, and points over the course of a 20-year career with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers.
Gretzky was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 22, 1999, just months after retiring. His jersey number, 99, was officially retired league-wide at the 2000 NHL All-Star Game, meaning no other NHL player will ever wear it again.
Since setting the mark, Gretzky’s goal-scoring record was eventually eclipsed by the Washington Capitals’ living legend, Alex Ovechkin, who has lit the lamp 922 times for D.C. thus far in his career. The Great Eight has already announced he will return for a 21st NHL season, which should further that tally.
