TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY… Nov 17th: Penguins All-Time Great Mario Lemieux is enshrined in the NHL Hall of Fame

On November 17, 1997, Mario Lemieux entered the NHL Hall of Fame after a stellar career. For most of his career, he was frequently mentioned in the same breath as ‘The Great One’, Wayne Gretzky.

‘Super Mario’ was drafted first overall by the Penguins in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. Lemieux would eventually lead Pittsburgh to consecutive Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992. A three-time winner of the Hart Trophy (given to the NHL’s Most Valuable Player), he would go on to score 690 goals and notch 1,033 assists for a total of 1723 points in his 17 seasons with the Penguins.

Today, he’s still contributing to the hockey culture in the Steel City. He owns a minority stake in the organization and still acts as an ambassador as a face of the franchise.
