TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY… Nov 16th: Jose Canseco wins the American League MVP Award

On November 16, 1988, José Canseco was named the first unanimous AL MVP since fellow Oakland Athletic Reggie Jackson in 1973.

Canseco was an easy choice for the honor, as he became the first-ever member of the 40-40 club — surpassing 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season. He capped that off by helping to lead Oakland to the World Series, which they lost to Orel Hershiser, Kirk Gibson, and the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games.
