TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY… Nov 9th: Holyfield Knocks Out Tyson in their First Encounter


On November 9, 1996, Evander Holyfield upsets Mike Tyson with an 11th-round knockout in Las Vegas to regain the WBA heavyweight boxing title. It was the first time the two boxing legends met in the ring, after their initial outing had been cancelled four years earlier when Tyson was convicted of rape and was incarcerated.

The two would meet in a rematch less than a year later, and their second bout is more remembered for the chaos and cannibalism surrounding it. On June 28, 1996, during their WBA Heavyweight Championship rematch. Frustrated, ‘Iron Mike’ bit off a chunk of Holyfield’s ear on multiple occasions in the third round at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, leading to Tyson’s disqualification from the fight.
