For the first time, the National and American Leagues were split in two, as divisional play is approved by MLB

On July 10th, 1968, Major League Baseball announced the American League and National League would be split into two divisions, beginning with the 1969 season. Both leagues would be comprised of an Eastern and Western Division. The winners would face off in a League Championship Series to determine the World Series participants.
MLB would later expand to three divisions per league in the 1990s, and add a wild-card round to the playoffs.
