FIFA’s 2025 Club World Cup had been derided by some as a bunch of pre-season friendlies where clubs won’t even play their best players, but in one statement, FIFA blew those criticisms out of the water.

At the FIFA Council meeting on Wednesday, FIFA announced the prize fund for the 2025 Club World Cup would be $1 billion.

That makes it soccer’s most lucrative 32-team tournament, dwarfing the $440 million prize fund for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
